interview with dj fullscale (via www.royalty-fashion.com)
“ The friendly, always smiling and funky Fullscale takes some time out of his busy schedule to have an interview with Royalty-Fashion. Besides being producer and a resident dj at MONDAY at Supperclub, he also played at Jimmy Woo, Mansion, Hotel Arena and so on…(you should check out the bio of this dude). With many diffirent styles such hiphop, r&b, Swingbeat, Disco, Funk all the way to Drum&base, Latin, Dubstep and House, he is known to make you swing and always has a natural positive vibe. Now signed at Robin Banks, it’s a perfect time to sit down with Fullscale chat a bit about hit past, hit blossoming carreer and his future plans.
You’re a dj now for almost 10 years. How did it all start for you and how did you come up with that name?
In the beginning I didn’t realy concider myself as a dj. I was really fascinated by the dj’s that do scratching and juggling. So after I watched my first DMC battle event, I was hooked. Since then I was spending all my money buying records, building up a collection and practicing every day on my scratching. Later on started recording mixtapes and doing school parties. From there on I was more into mixing and the first gigs we’re born. At that time, still didn’t had a dj name. one of my favorite records was Showbiz and AG’s Full Scale EP. So there you have it…
Your style is known as music “ for the ladies”. Can you describe what that is and why people refer to it like that?
I admit, as a dj I love to play music that fills up the dancefloor with ladies. They always bring a good vibe to the club and when they like the music suddenly the guys like the music to LOL. I like that real soulfull r&b and that neo soul and ofcourse that golden era music. I grew up in the 90’s so I love to play all that good ol stuff. I think its just that ‘step step side to side’ funky feeling that makes it hard to stand still. Everybody loves music with soul right?
You’re the frontman of the wellknown room downstairs at MONDAY, Supperclub. What can people who have never been there expect?
Somebody never been there? LOL. Well it’s called MONDAY and we act like that too! It’s a easy going but yet crazy fun club night.
You don’t have to dress up or arrive in a limo. Just put on whatever you like and take the cab, its all good. Also music-wise we put on whatever we like. Upstairs you can enjoy some great House music with some of the best house dj’s our small country has. And downstairs im always joined by Flava and Goodgrip and we just party! No rules, no presure…just simply FUN!
Who or what inspires you when it comes to music?
There are a lot of artists and people who inspire me aswell as happenings and progress.
First of all the late great mr king of pop Michael Jackson. He was actualy my first musical inspiration. At the age of 5 I ate, drank, sleaped MJ. And offcourse the older you get the more music you discover. Other people and things that inspire me are God, Luther Vandross, J-Dilla, Jay-z, Premier, my brother, HipHop, Diggin crate’s, Soul, Love, hate, KFC all kinds of things I guess.
You always stay true to your roots when it comes to your style. Do you ever feel the need to spin something completely different?
It’s not really sticking to my roots I think. Cause my roots are more with that hardore hip hop. But I love to play music that I like. And I believe that a crowd can hear the difference when a dj is playing ‘his or her’ music and is into his set instead of music that just pays the bills. But then again sometimes you need to expand your horizon and try other stuff that works better for a particular night. And when you notice that and you respond quik enough it is worth switching lanes from time to time.
Besides being a dj, you’re also a producer. Which people do you work with?
Yes.. I don’t only play music, I also make it. I worked with a dude from UK couple years ago, did some tracks. I produced some tracks for a new york artist, A-Clay called ‘Put me in jail’ and ‘I gotchu’. And now im workin on an album project with Goodgrip. We go way back..almost 20 years now. So we are finaly putting that dream in work. But soon more details about that LOL.
Do you have more activities besides being a dj and producer?
I also do events once in a while. I like starting new things and trying new things. Even if it’s not reinventing the weel, I like to make it a bit diffirent. A couple of the club events I did we’re Empire at Vuong, Heibel in de Tent, Variety, My dear Thursday and Dem Dutches.
I also do dj workshops for kids sometimes. Teaching some of the basics of mixing and scratching even let them watch some hiphop documentary.
As someone that has been a dj for so many years allready, how do you see being a dj as a day to day job?
Well first of all for me it’s the best job in the world. If you do something that you like and you do it with passion, I think that’s the job that’s fits you. Offcourse you have your up’s and down’s, it’s a buisness that you build and run. Most people underestimate this job. They say ‘ its just a hobby not a real job’ But there’s more then just those late night hours in clubs. Like I said it’s a buisness and you need to stay ‘alive’
I love to do it!
Could you spend your entire life as a dj? Or do you think you can be as succesfull doing something else?
I think I can..i hope I can!. If not I find something else that im good at and turn that into something succesfull. But I bet it has music involved.
What do you doe when you have a day off? Do you go out yourself, and if so where do you hang out?
If I have a day off and im not working in the studio I like to just sit back and relax. Sometimes I go out myself or go watch some fellow dj’s play somewhere. For me only Paradiso still got it to be honnest. Otherwise I go see a movie or visit fam.
Which music do you listen to when you’re on your way to one of your gigs.
I got those cd’s on heavy rotation. Most of the time you while find some Dwele or Musiq soulchild in the car. Or some oldies like Delfonics, Black ivory, Moments. And when im in the car I listen to a lot of stuff that I cant play at gigs, to bad.
Since February 2010, you’ve been signed by the artist agency Robin Banks. How did that go?
One of the guys who started the agency was a regular guest at MONDAY and he was always telling me he wanted me to join the agency as soon as they’d start. And one of the most important things for me was the love for the game that was involved with this happening. I believe in people who believe..So we gets it done.
Can you tell us more about Robin Banks?
Check out www.robinbanks.nl for the infromation. They can probably tell it way better than I do.
What else can we expect from Fullscale and Robin Banks in 2010?
Expect nothing and you be supprised at all time! There are some nice things coming this year. Some new productions! A Robin Banks compilation album droppin april this year I think. Some new MONDAY mixtapes. Maybe even some new events…of some old events!
Where are you going now?
Im gonna finish up on some of the tracks for the Robin Banks compilation album. And later on I think im gonna watch a dvd and relax a little.
